Weekend in Colorado!

On Thursday morning we flew out to Colorado for a weekend of snowboarding at Breckenridge. Unfortunately boyfriend couldn't come since his knee is still hurt. We all chipped in for a new snowboard for Jax's birthday - he had no idea ... we snuck the snowboard into his bag while he wasn't looking :)

The conditions were great! It was snowing lightly the whole time we were there so there was plenty of packed powder.

mac n' cheese - first attempt

I tried making mac n' cheese last night based on Alton Brown's recipe. I added more different kinds of cheese, using cheddar, colby jack mix, a little parmesan and 1 baby bell.

It didn't turn out as gooey as I like it so next time I'm gonna try making the bacon mac n' cheese that Jerry made for our Christmas party that he sent me:

This is the recipe I used but I modified it slightly. I added 1 pack of bacon, cayenne powder, 25% more cottage cheese, and 1 diced jalapeno, and one can of fritos jalapeno cheddar cheese dip. And only some parm cheese in the bread crumbs.

Kimchi Stew on a cold night

Last night I was in a cooking mood - it was raining here in San Diego so I made kimchi jige (a spicy stew).

It super easy to make and it's easy to make just a small serving. If I don't have any beef or pork around I just omit it and it still tastes great.
Fry up some meat (I used pork) that's been marinated with soy sauce, sesame oil and cornstarch in the pot.
Then add dashi, a whole bunch of kimchi, firm tofu, and water. I also like to add a teaspoon of Korean soybean paste or Ssamjang Sauce.

Serve with rice.

Monday night we had more drinking and games. Jeff, Carl and Sabz came over and we finished more than 1/2 a Crandle while we played Catchphrase.
I took Tuesday off since I didn't feel well. Eric found out that he doesn't have to have surgery for his knee ... yay! Eric made lasagna and Sabz, Marc and Melanie came over for dinner.

Saturday we went to a baby shower for our friends in the afternoon. Later that night our friends came over and we had a game night playing Catchphrase, Sour Apples to Apples and Outburst.

Sunday we made breakfast cups with turkey bacon, eggs, tomatoes, cheese and green onions. Super easy - just make sure to line the cups with strips of bacon and bake that until crispy. Then add all the other stuff. They turned out great but I think next time we'll add even more stuff. You can basically put anything that you would normally put in an omelet or scramble.

Last night I decided to finally put together a cool jewelry organizer after all the cool inspiration from Pinterest. I had a bathroom etagere I bought years ago that never used. So I bought some cup hooks and made this:

And tonight I finally finished the baby blanket for baby Carpio. I had a little extra yarn so added some tassels to the points.

Crafting and Organizing

Wednesday night was another crafty night with the girls. I'm still working on the round ripple baby blanket for baby Carpio and should have it done in a few days. You can get the free pattern on Ravelry or directly here.

My new addiction is Pinterest - so I'm finding so many cool ideas for organizing and decorating. Now that I've moved back into my condo, I've gotten rid of a lot of crap and now want to focus on organizing.

Last night I hit up Big Lots and bought a bunch of plastic containers so that I could start organizing my craft stuff. That means 6 boxes of yarn, 6 smaller boxes of more yarn and other stuff like felt, beads, stuffing, etc. Still have too much! So New Year resolution is to not buy any more yarn until I finish knitting up at least 1/2 of what I've got.

Went to our first Yelp Elite party of 2012 - it was elite's only so the event was smaller than usual. The food was ok ... There were nachos with kettle chips, bacon and super strong blue cheese, sweet potato fries, and chicken tenders battered with chips served on top of a bed of chips. Yeah ... a lotta chips.

Last night I met up with the MILFs for craft night! Our first one since moving back. This time, the boys took all the kids to Chuck-E-Cheese so that we could concentrate on all of our projects. Everyone had great projects they were working on - check out laidoffmom's coverage of the night.

Just like old times, Sabz, Carl and I had dinner at Best Taste of China, where got some of my favorite dishes like the spicy fish fillet with tofu.

Then drank and watched tv at my house. We discovered this show called Hardcore Pawn - a reality show about a pawn shop in Detroit. It's full of angry people trying to get money for their crappy stuff and is an excellent source of entertainment.

Weekend Recap

My stuff finally arrived Friday and we've been unpacking and organizing all weekend.
I got to take a little break on Friday to meet up with Ricky for happy hour at Mr. Wasabi. They've changed up their happy hour - no more $1 nigiri. But we did score some free sake since one of my friends works there.

Saturday we had dinner at The Counter in Carlsbad. It was a dinner party to announce the sex of our friend's baby. Everyone got a cupcake and whoever found the little baby doll hidden inside gets to tell everyone else - it's a girl!

Sunday we headed out to Ikea to get a dresser. Afterwards we stopped by Chamorro Grill for lunch!

Then we hung out at Roy's and watched Transformers 3 - terrible movie.

Christmas 2011

So many Christmas parties this year! I love it!!

Started with the GoCar Christmas Party & White Elephant Gift Exchange. The gift exchange was themed "80's and 90's" this year. I ended up with the Operation game.

Then we had a Secret Santa gift exchange at the Earthbound Studio where I got the 13 Assassins DVD and the electronic CatchPhrase game.

On Christmas Eve we had dinner with the Santos side of the family.

I stopped by Niki's mom's house too where I got to have some of her famous ham.
On Christmas day, we had lunch with the Farin side of the family. So touching that they also got me gifts. I've never gotten so many Christmas gifts before!

Then we headed up to LA for Christmas dinner at my mom's house. We didn't have a big party, just my mom, grandma, brother, his fiance and my boyfriend. Grandma made her super yummy oxtail stew. Afterwards we drove around looking at the lights - one street had all these huge trees lit up.

The day after Christmas we had our LA fam party. This year no one could make it out to Mammoth so we celebrated Christmas, Kwong and Young's birthdays, and my welcome back. Our white elephant was a great success this year too, all the gifts were so great!

Feels good to be back :) Came back to SD a few weeks ago and yesterday started back up at Nokia. So wonderful to have so many people happy to see me - it's really flattering. When I found out they were opening an Umami Burger in SF I was very excited to take boyfriend there - especially since he loves burgers. I've been to the one in LA and it's super crowded, so wanted to go here before everyone figured it out. For a gourmet burger, the prices aren't bad. I got the Umami Burger combo which came with fries and an Anchor Steam - $17. Boyfriend got the Manly Burger - beer-cheddar cheese, smoked-salt onion strings, bacon lardons - $11.

I got a job offer to move back to SD but its for a lot less money. So I dunno ... thinking about it. How much is living in SD worth?

Hopefully it'll make the cold SF nights more bearable. Can't say I've been loving it up here. I miss everyone terribly and often feel like I'm missing out on all the fun. Luckily San Diego is only an hour and half plane ride away ... or else I'd go mad. So far I've been able to fly back at least once a month (and keep planning to until at least the end of the year). 6 weddings down and 2 more to go.
There are a few thing I do love about living up here though.
1. My job. Absolutely love it. Always something new and it's fun!
2. Food selection. Always a cool new place to discover. Other than great burritos, SF has everything for your foodie desires.
3. Public transportation - it's quick, it's easy and environmentally friendly. There's always some funny kid on the bus, or an old man telling jokes.

What I hate:
1. Public transportation - I know, I know, I put it under things I love. But the SF Muni and I have a love/hate relationship. Guy eating vienna sausages from the can and dripping it all over the seats? I hate you. Super stinky girl that smells like mildew? I hate you too.
2. The weather. It's cold and windy. all. the. time. I can't wear shorts and flip flops every day and the beach is just for bonfires up here.
3. My friends aren't all here.

One thing I really miss about San Diego is our weekly Tuesday trivia and taco Tuesday nights at Pitcher's. Don't even get me started on the Mexican food up here in SF. It basically sucks and I'd rather eat Taco Bell. For some reason they love wrapping their burritos in foil out here so the tortilla gets all mushy. They also like to use whole pinto beans instead of yummy refried mushed up beans full of lard.

Distance definitely makes the heart grow fonder. I can't wait to get a California Burrito when I get back.

First week of August

On Monday I had dinner with the BFF and her husband at Jack's Restaurant and Bar in San Bruno.

Wednesday night I met up with Ky at Ruby Skye since he was visiting for a pharmacy convention. Tried not to stay out too late, but I was a little more drunk than I had intended to get. Luckily cabs are plentiful in SF.

Aileen moved up Thursday night from LA so on Friday night I met up with Aileen, snoopy tent and bandanna boy for dinner and drinks. We had Chicago-style pizza at Patxi's and then drinks at Fly Bar. I'm happy that now I have another friend living up in SF.
Saturday was a buy-stuff-for-the-apartment day for Aileen. We spent all day at Target, Daiso and Costco and filled up my entire car. We ended the night with Star India's dinner buffet.

Sunday we walked around Japan Town for a bit then headed back to my place where the guys were so kind as to move the couch from upstairs down to my apartment. Yay! now I can watch TV on the couch. We then had dinner at Q Restaurant and Wine Bar where I had probably the best mac n' cheese of my life.

This is definitely the year of weddings. We started off July with Ericka and Alan's wedding ...

then Randi and Mercadi's wedding ...

then Krissy and the kids came up to visit us and we went to Off the Grid ...

then boyfriend and the JL's came up to visit us and we went to the Gilroy Garlic Festival ...

met up with Young and Sarah for some sushi ...

then stopped by at Jason's parents' restaurant for lunch before they left.

went to Cindy and Coleman's wedding ...

had KBBQ with the LA gang ...

and got my boyfriend back just in time for Memorial weekend shindigs in San Diego.
